  • Submit the IVF to the Office of Financial Aid! Within 4 weeks of your FAFSA submission, the Office of Financial Aid (208 Calvin Hall) will send you a post card telling you to print your UI Verification Form (IVF) from ISIS. On the IVF box #17- Special Circumstances, be sure to note loss of employment due to separation from military service. This will affect the amount of your financial aid.
  • Apply for your federal GI Bill education benefits. You can apply online at vabenefits.vba.va.gov/vonapp/main.asp.
  • Submit the Veterans Worksheet along with a certified copy of your separation papers [form DD-214] to Veterans Services in the Office of the Registrar @ 1 Jessup Hall (319.335.0219) to complete the application process.
  • The first benefit check will be received approximately six weeks after the first day of class.
  • Complete the Veterans Worksheet once a year to continue receiving GI BILL at the University Of Iowa. This worksheet is available online or in the office in 1 Jessup Hall.

  • Register for Medical Benefits! Iowa City has its own VA Medical Center. OIF/OEF veterans are eligible for enhanced enrollment health benefits for 5 years after their date of their most recent discharge from active duty. Submit or mail VA Form 10-10EZ and a copy of your discharge papers [DD-214] to the VA Form 10-10EZ is available here: www.1010ez.med.va.gov/sec/vha/1010ez/Form/vha-10-10ez.pdf.
  • Submit your Military Transcript! Your military experience may be worth college credit. You can find links to official military transcripts for all services at www.uiowa.edu/admissions/undergrad/requirements/xfer-military.htm. Print your transcript and take it to the Admissions Office in 108 Calvin Hall or have it mailed by your military service directly to the Admissions Office.
  • Get a Job! Find information on employment opportunities here www.uiowa.edu/financial-aid/employment/ and at the UI Jobnet www.bo.uiowa.edu/~finaid/jobform.html.
  • Stop in and say Hi! Visit the Veterans Center and Lounge to learn about more benefits you might be eligible for and meet other veterans attending the University of Iowa. The University of Iowa offers veterans services at the Veterans Center located in the Communications Center. The center is staffed by veterans and is designed to ensure that students at the University receive all the benefits they are entitled to through the university, federal, state and local governments. It also serves as liaison between the University and student veterans in order to better address issues specific to them. Assistance and information can be provided regarding issues such as housing grants and loans, free medical services available to veterans, and receiving credit hours for military schools. There are so many benefits available that you may be missing out on some of them. This service is free and available to family members as well as veterans. We are generally open from 10-5 Monday through Friday, but calling ahead is advisable.
