Be Aware of Your Rights When Medical Devices Malfunction

E-mail Print
From an email:

In a February 2008 report entitled “Prosthetics in the VA: Past, Present, and Future,” the U.S. Naval Institute stated that the seven year war on terror has resulted in 737 soldiers losing limbs, 116 suffering spinal cord injuries, 53 instances of total blindness, and 3,145  traumatic brain injuries.  Most, if not all, of these veterans will benefit from the use of medical devices to increase the ability to perform activities of daily life and overall benefit from a greater quality of life.  Medical devices have become integral to ensuring that veterans have better transitions to civilian life and are better able to contribute to their families, communities, and country. Additionally, as some of our veterans age, these service men and women also become reliant on medical device technology such as implanted defibrillators, pacemakers, and hearing devices.

As a counselor he would like to look at the positive aspects of deployment to change the mentality of people deploying. If you have anything you'd like to share, email me ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) and I can send you the survey.

- Dan is also working on setting up a fly fishing outing for Veterans in the area, which got us thinking about other activities we can do as a group outside the immediate Iowa City area. If you have any ideas, let us know!

- A few Veterans will be going on a bar crawl December 4th, and we're going bowling later this month. More information to come.

DoD to issue compensation for Stop Loss

E-mail Print

From the NY Times:

The Defense Department said Wednesday that it would begin paying retroactive compensation to troops who were prevented from leaving the military under the contentious policy known as stop-loss.

The new payments apply to about 185,000 troops who, in the years after 2001, were not allowed to retire or be discharged on time because of stop-loss, an involuntary extension of active service that officials said was necessary to ensure that there were enough officers, skilled personnel and combat enlisted men for two wars, in Iraq and Afghanistan.

If you were affected by this program, I encourage you to read this article, as it has more service-specific contact information.

The University of Iowa Veterans Association is a group of Veterans and others interested in helping newly arrived veterans or returning reservists at The University of Iowa to adjust and integrate into University Life. Additionally, the group plans to support everyone still serving in the armed forces and their families, and to raise the awareness of fellow students of the sacrifices being made on their behalf every single day. This is not a pro-war or anti-war group; it is a pro-service member group plain and simple, so people of all political ideologies are welcome.
